Canada’s Greenhouse Gases

Will someone please explain to me why Canada has a carbon tax? We produce 726 mega-tonnes of GHG (carbon) per year. But our 594 billion trees absorb 7,010 megatons per year. Ten times the amount produced. Seems to me that other countries should be paying Canada for our trees.
